Witness Testimony:

  • 12670.

(Mr. Jeune.) Where do you live ? —No. 44, The Strand, Walmer.

  • 12671.

What is your occupation ? — Channel pilot.

  • 12672.

    What did you get ? — I got 3L.

  • 12673.

Who from ? — From my brother William Bullen.

  • 12674.

That was for your vote, I suppose ? — I do not think so.

  • 12675.

Do not you know it was ? — No.

  • 12676.

Then let us hear about it ? — I was detained ashore. I should have been to sea three or four days before if it had not been for the election and stopped at home of course for the election.

  • 12677.

Did you get the 3L. before or after you voted ? — After I had voted.

  • 12678.

Were you asked to vote before ? — No, not by any one.

  • 12679.

If you had not voted do you think you would have got the 3L. ? — If I had gone to sea, perhaps I might have got the 3L.

  • 12680.

If you had not given a vote, do you think you would have got the 3L. ? — Yes. I was working the same as what the others did ; I assisted in working.

  • 12681.

Suppose you had stayed at home, but not given any vote at all, do you think you would have got the 3L ? — I should have got something.

  • 12682.

That very sum of 3L ? — It might not have been the sum of 3L., but I should have got paid for helping, assisting in working in putting POLES up, and takin the FLAGS down at night and putting them up.

  • 12683.

Were you engaged in putting POLES and FLAGS ‘ up and down ? — Yes ; I assisted.

  • 12684.

But that is not what I asked; where you engaged to do that ? — I was engaged as well as some of the rest that assisted, but I received nothing for it but the 3L.

  • 12685.

After the voting was over your brother gave you 3L. ? — Yes.

  • 12686.

Do you not know that your vote had something to do with it ? — If it had not been for the election I should have been to sea.

  • 12687.

I daresay ; but if it had not been for the election, do not you know you would not have got the 3L. ? — No. I would have stopped at home for nothing as far as that goes.

  • 12688.

But if you had not have voted you would not have got the 3L. ? — I should have got a part of it, and perhaps all.

  • 12689.

You would have got part of it ? — No doubt I should.

  • 12690.

But not all ? — No, I worked hard for what I got.

  • 12691.

If you had no vote at all, do you think you would have received the 3L. ? — l daresay I should not without my vote have got quite so much as that, but I worked for that.

  • 12692.

Do you think you did 3L. of work ? — Yes, and with my detention and loss of time.

  • 12693.

But not without your detention and loss of time ? — Detention and work. I consider that was honestly worth 3L.

  • 12694.

The 3L. would be for two things, detention and work ? — Yes.

  • 12695.

How much do you say would be for detention and loss of time, and how much for work ; half-a-half ? — Yes, half-and-half.

  • 12696.

Is that all you had ? — That is all I had, which I considered I earned.
