Kept the Pier Hotel (Tavern) at the time of the election. He had retired by the time the trial took place. This is now Dunkerley’s. Received £5 for committee room, £6 for canvassing and £96 to distribute between 32 voters. 3 of which paid by Mr Woodruff – Wellspring, Nash & Abbott. At the time of the trial he was living at 13 Victoria Road.

    (Mr. Turner.) What are you ? — I am living retired. I kept the “Pier” hotel when the election was on.

    Had you 5L ? — Yes, for the COMMITTEE ROOM, and 6L. for the canvassing. There (handing a paper) is a list of the money I received from Mr. Olds.

    Did you receive the money from Mr. Olds himself ? — Yes.

    Besides that what did you have ? — That is all the money I had, 107L. ; 96L. for voters, 6L. as canvasser, and 5L. COMMITTEE ROOM.

    There are 32 of them ? — Yes, 3L. each.

    Did you pay it to them yourself ? — Not everyone —three I think Mr. Woodruff paid.

    When did you arrange for them to have the 3L. ? — Persons called upon me at different times ; if I did not see them when I had been to their houses they called up to see me, and told me what the other side were giving, and I said I would give the same, and that was 3L.

    hen they came to you, and asked you what you would give ? — Yes, telling me what the other side had promised. Many said they would rather vote upon the other side if they could get as much as they could upon the Liberal side.

    Who were the three that Mr. Woodruff paid ? — I think they were Wellspring, Nash, and Abbott.

    Had you any other money besides what you have returned here ? — No. I gave receipts in for all that money to Mr. Olds.

    Did Mr. Olds give it to you on purpose to use in this way ? — Of course he knew how the money was going to be served out.

    He gave it to you before the election ? — I think I had it upon the morning of the election, but I would not be positive. I think it was before breakfast that morning.
