In his testimony he admitted that apart from hiring committee rooms in numerous public houses he also hired rooms in one or two private houses. George Hayward the hairdresser at 123 (now 81) Beach Street was one such although he wasn’t called as a witness.

    Where does Mr. Allen live ? — In Peter Street.

    Mr, Ramell, 36L ; where does he live ? — High Street. He is a grocer.

    Then Cox is put down at 5L., and Hobday at 12L. Who is Mr. Cox ; he got 5L. ? — I do not know where he lives ; I know the man.

    Hobday 12L. ; where does he live, and where is he ? — He is a farmer. I do not know where he lives.

    Cannot you remember where Hobday lives ? — No, I am not quite certain. It is somewhere in Middle Deal. I am not quite sure ; somewhere in the outskirts of the town.

    H. Millen, 30L. ; what is he. There were two Millens ; one is H. and the other is J. ; and they both had the same sum. Where do they live ? — One lives close to the railway station. I do not know where the other lives.

    S. Ralph, he had 96L. ; where does he live ? — At the “Forrester Inn.”

    Here are three small sums ; Pettit, 1L. ; King, 1L. 17s. 6d., and Cox, 10s. What are those payments made for ? — I think they were for special messengers, or something of that kind ; for some services rendered.

    Lee, 12L. ; where does Mr. Lee live ? — Custom House Lane.

    Do you know what Lee is ? — He is assistant to a grocer.

    Norris, 6L. That is a third Mr. Norris ? — No, it is one of the other two. That would be on the day of the election. As to those small amounts, I could not say who received the money in the hurry and skurry of the moment.
