    Enclosing the 3L. 5s. ? — Yes, and saying we was to come home immediately for the election.

    (Mr. Turner.) Anybody besides yourself  ? — Yes, there were six 3L.

    (Mr. Holl.) Then there was 3L. 5s. each ? — Yes.

    Then altogether there was 19L. 10s., was there; or how much was sent altogether by Pain ? — I think it was 32L. ; I will not be sure.

    What did the letter say you were to do with it ? — Oh, there was no money sent. The letter specified we was to go home as quick as possible for the election.

    And he would pay you 32L. ? — He did not say he would pay us 32L. Pain received 32L., I believe, after he got home.

    What did he say in the letter when he wanted you to come home ? — “Bear a hand as quick as possible for the election,” and we left there and tried to get home. We could not get home no further than Seaford, so two of us came home by land ; it blew so hard we could not get home.
