NotesBiography

No 13 Beach Street was one fo the houses on the east side of the promenade which have long since been demolished. It was opposite Griffin Street.

From 1861, Joseph Maxted was formerly the landlord of the Sir Sidney Smith on Beach Street. In 1869 he was charged with assault and his licence not renewed.

Appealing his conviction, Maria Marsh, daughter of the previous landlord who still lived on the premises, stated she had been kept there by Maxted and his wife (notorious drunkards) for illegal purposes.

The keeper of the Royal Adelaide Baths opposite confirmed seeing Marsh entertaining men in a bedroom of the house on several occasions and also that he had seen Maxted lying "heels upwards" in the bar before breakfast.

The magistrates refused the appeal on the grounds the house was the worst conducted in Deal.
