John GB Roberts was born in Deal in 1846 to William and Louisa Epps Roberts. He was baptised on 25th February 1846. His age was shown as 35 in the 1881 census.

He married Lydia Charlotte Grigg who was 3 years younger. She was the daughter of Edward G Grigg who is named as the licencee of the Albion at various times.

When Roberts died at just 37 in March of 1883, his wife took over as Licensee until 1886 when she married George Wilmot Finnis, younger brother of Thomas Hornsby Finnis who was the publican of the Fox on Beach Street. Their father was also Thomas Hornsby Finnis.

The 1891 census lists GW Finnis as Licensed Victualler of the Sir Colin Campbell Public house in Walmer. Lydia died in on the 6th July 1911 and is buried at Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal.
