Resided at the Clarendon Tap looking after the business for the landlord who was paralysed. The licence was transferred to him in September 1881. The previous landlord remained at the pub as a lodger.
Possible he also received money from WH Ramell for making flags.
23/8/1884 John Clements set himself alight after falling down holding an oil lamp. He died at the pub on 10/9/1884. He had lost his wife less than a year before this. Previously he had been a boatman. On 8/11/1884 the licence was transferred to George Bailey.

The Clarendon Tap stood on the corner of Middle Street and Short Street which is now part of the Middle Street car park. The pub was demolished along with 4 houses in an air raid that occurred on 4th October 1940. It was never rebuilt.
