For canvassing & vote. John Bullock Millen testified that Redman would accept nothing less than £10 and since it was near to the election they had no choice. Redman said he was employed by Mr Cornwell for 3 or 4 days to solicit votes. Father of Charles Redman, Landlord of the Rose and Crown and Alphonso James Redman, Landlord of the Providence Inn in King Street.

Aged 63 at the time of the election. Listed as a Gentleman aged 64 in the 1881 census. Married to Mary Elizabeth also 64. The 1871 census shows him as a Licensed Victualler living at 122 (now 79) Beach Street with his wife and two sons, James, 21, a tailor and Charles, 18, a carpenter's apprentice. Mary died on March 25th 1887.

No 122 (79) Beach Street was the Rose snd Crown (later the Admiral Penn). At the time of the election, his son Charles had been Landlord of the Rose and Crown since 1874. Another son, Alphonso James Redman was Landlord of the Providence Inn at 1, King STreet
