Born c 1821, to parents John Hanger & Dorothy Redsull, the 1861 census shows him living at 6 Dolphin Street with his wife Mary and five children.

He was not asked to confirm his address, however, the Poll Book for 1881 shows 74 Middle Street as his qualifying property which was occupied by his sister-in-law Laura Hanger, widow of his brother Edward Joseph Hanger (born 1806) at that time.
