The Eastry Union
Eastry Poor Law Union officially came into existence on 27th April 1835 when the Union erected a workhouse at the south side of Mill Lane in Eastry to provide for the elderly, infirm and children. Designed to house about 500 inmates, its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 27 in number, representing its 26 constituent parishes which included Deal, Walmer and Sandwich.
