NotesBiography

Aged 22 at the time, he was employed initially during the election by Mr Usher, the Auctioneer to take bills to various establishments, two or three days a week. Mr Crompton Roberts’ brother, Captain William Roberts then appointed him as a Messenger to take notes between the Royal Oak and the Royal Hotel.

He was interrogated at some length regarding who he saw when delivering messages but was reluctant to give names, stating he had been threatened by Mr Hoban and Dr.Hulke who called him ‘a turd’.

Lived with this mother Louisa, a lodging house keeper. He is listed as an invalid in the 1881 census. His testimony at the petition trial made much mention of his medical condition and whether he was to be taken to Charlemont asylum.
